YOUTH POETRY AND SHORT STORY CONTESTS
 
Encouragement of creative writing skills in youth (grade 6-8) and recognition of outstanding achievement in writing to enhance self-esteem.
 
Category 3: Middle School – Grades 6, 7, 8
 
Rules:
  • Youth (grades 6-8) may enter one poem and/or one short story on the District Level.
  • Authors must be of amateur status: earnings from writings must not exceed $500 annually.
  • Manuscripts entered must not have been published prior to the competition and must be an original work of the author.
  • Entries must be written on word processors or typewriters, one side only, double-spaced, with minimum margins of 1”, on 8 ½” X 11” paper.
  • Short stories are limited to 2,000 words.
  • Poems can be any style with a minimum length of 8 lines and a maximum of 30 lines.
  • All entries must be written during the contest year.
  • Entries must have the following (single-spaced) in the top right corner of each page:
Author’s name
Email address
Mailing address
Telephone number

Name of Club & District (Women's Club of Pittsford, Lake District)
Category: (Poem or Short Story)
Title of Work

Grade level category: (6-8) Not students grade level


​Judges would appreciate contestants numbering pages.  SPELLING COUNTS
​A panel of independent judges will select the winners.
Manuscripts will not be returned.  Authors should keep a copy.
 
Deadline: All entries must be received by February 17, 2023
​
Entries are judged in February.  1st place winners will be sent on to the state competition.

Winning entries will be read at the April 2023 WCOP general meeting, by the student.
